THE ARTIST BOOK AS A LOCUS OF CREATIVE AND THEORETICAL EXPERIMENTATION

The artist book has evolved into a dynamic site of artistic practice, where the material form and structure of the book become central to creative and critical inquiry. As both medium and method, it opens new avenues for research and knowledge production across disciplines, including experimental methodologies, interdisciplinary practice, digital creation, and artist-led or small-scale publishing ecosystems. In these contexts, the artist book functions not only as an object, but as a space for testing ideas, challenging conventions, and rethinking how knowledge is produced and shared.

This call invites submissions that engage with artist books through diverse perspectives, including art history, literary critique, production methods, exhibition practices, and accessibility. Topics may include, but are not limited to:

Art Historical and Literary Analysis: How do artist books challenge or reshape dominant narratives?
Materiality and Production: What does material form signify in an increasingly digital landscape?
Theoretical Frameworks: What critical approaches illuminate contemporary book art?
Exhibition and Access: How can artist books be effectively displayed and made accessible?
Identity and Power: How do artist books engage cultural, racial, and gender dynamics?
AI and Digital Technologies: How are emerging technologies transforming the field?

We welcome submissions from scholars, artists, curators, and practitioners that explore the intersections of visual, textual, and critical practices, addressing both historical developments and contemporary innovations in artist book culture.

This session will be held in person in New York.

Openings: Studies in Book Art Call for Articles

Openings: Studies in Book Art is committed to publishing current scholarly research on the artist book. We accept critical academic articles for double-blind peer-review as well as articles dedicated to studio praxis, student perspectives, book and exhibition reviews that are provide scholarship and perspectives about the book as medium, construct, and work of art, in all of the books manifold interdisciplinary forms throughout the world.

Openings welcomes manuscripts involving the artist book with a focus upon, but not exclusively limited to:

The history of the book, ancient to contemporary; interdisciplinary methodologies; topical debates considering the development of the artist book; studio praxis; history; art history; material culture; visual studies; museum studies; collecting; cultural history; multimedia; pop culture; public art; art activism; pedagogy; methodology; historiography; etc.

Works that reflect interdisciplinary and diverse perspectives are especially welcome.

Manuscript submissions are accepted on a rolling basis and must be formatted according to the Submission Preparation Checklist.

Please note that membership in CBAA is not required to contribute to Openings.
